Metal Roofing comes in a wide variety of profiles, gauges and finishes. Whether we are discussing a standing seam, or stone coated steel roof system there is a lot of misinformation out there.
As an Atlanta Roofer specializing in metal roofs, Sparrow Exteriors has a comprehensive understanding of these systems. While our clients have unique needs and demands, we’ve found that there are six basic questions those new to metal roofing want to know.
Q: Is Lightning Attracted to a Metal Roof?
A: There is absolutely no increase in the likelihood of your home being struck by lightning if you have a metal roof. In fact, if lightning does strike your metal roof, the energy safely dissipates throughout the entire surface of the roof and can exit into the ground. Also, because metal roofing is NOT combustible or flammable, it is an even smarter choice for roof coverings in areas that are severe weather and lightning prone.
Q: Is a Stone Coated Steel Roof Noisy?
A: No. In fact, a Stone Coated Steel Roof is often much quieter than even an asphalt shingle roof. Because of the way it is manufactured and installed, a buffer zone is created of dead air space, reducing sound and temperature. Even torrential rains falling on the roof panels is no louder than it would be on a heavy wood shake roof.
Q: Is Rust a Problem with Stone Coated Steel Roofing?
A: No! Most manufacturers are made from high quality 26 gauge, pre-primed, galvanized steel that is coated with an acrylic base coat. Granules are then embedded over this base coat. Finally, a clear acrylic over-glaze is applied and baked on. This provides your home with a long lasting, durable and fade resistant protection for a lifetime of enjoyment.
Q: Is Denting a Problem?
A: No. Stone Coated Metal Roofs and many standing seam roof systems can and do stand up to large hailstones, heavy snow loads and extreme wind conditions without any structural or cosmetic damage. For instance, Gerard Metal Roofing’s weatherproof warranty includes a 120 MPH Wind Warranty (equal to an F2 tornado!) and 2.5” Hailstone Warranty.
Q: Can I Walk on a Metal Roof?
A: Yes. While safety considerations must be made, metal roofing can be walked on. Different gauges and profiles require different approaches, so we recommend calling Sparrow Exteriors or the manufacturer beforehand.
